The year 2020/21 brought many challenges for Jysk (formerly Dänisches Bettenlager in Germany) in the form of thousands of closed stores. However, the company managed to leverage the combination of physical stores in 50 countries and strong digital platforms to achieve sales of EUR 4.4 billion and an EBIT result of EUR 610 million. This represented a 7% increase in sales, while the EBIT result was 21% higher than in 2019/20, which was also a record year for Jysk.
According to Jan Bøgh (President and CEO), the Corona pandemic had a very different impact on the company from country to country: "Our biggest market is Germany, where Jysk has almost 1,000 stores, and it was also one of the countries where the closure of non-food retail lasted the longest. As a result, sales in Germany were down compared to the previous year," says Bøgh. (Germany sales were EUR 978.7 million in 2020/21). On the other hand, Jysk had significantly increased sales in Scandinavia, England, Ireland, Belgium and some countries in Eastern and Central Europe, which "more than compensated for the decline in Germany."
