Admittedly, a log cabin an hour and a half west of Norway's capital, Oslo, is not the most easily accessible place in the world. However, why it should be worth more than a passing thought for every carpet enthusiast to figure out how to reach this log cabin is explained by what it houses. Until 24 September 2023, you can admire the exhibition "Carpet art of the nomads" here, in Nyfossum, part of the Blaa Farve Vaerket museum, which is very well known in Norway. The event that organized by Lars Nygård and Jans Eskeland, revolves around the fascinating carpets and textiles of the Baluchi.
The exhibition presents over 200 pieces that have been lovingly gathered by the two organizers over the past decades. Apart from the impressive number of carpets and textiles, it is the careful curation of the exhibits that captivates. It allows visitors to first get an overview of the diverse types, patterns, and manufacturing techniques before delving into the details at their own pace. Notably, the exhibition also showcases a large number of flatweaves from the Baluchi, which are often overshadowed by the knotted carpets.
Accompanying the exhibition, the book "Baluch" is available for purchase. It presents each of the exhibited pieces on two pages, offering a comprehensive insight into the diversity that Baluch carpets and textiles have to offer. The book can be acquired directly from the author for a price of 150 EUR. For orders and further information, please contact carpetlars@hotmail.com.
