Brüder Schlau: Insolvency proceedings under self-administration opened

On 1 September 2025, the Local Court of Bielefeld opened insolvency proceedings under self-administration for the German Brüder Schlau Group, which also includes the Hammer specialist stores.

In June, Brüder Schlau had declared itself insolvent. The number of wholesale branches (Schlau) has since decreased from 63 to 61, while the number of Hammer specialist stores has fallen from almost 180 to 172. No information is currently available on the status of the restructuring efforts for the group.

The proceedings affect, among others, Brüder Schlau GmbH & Co. KG (case no. IN 558/25), Schlau Großhandels GmbH & Co. KG (case no. 43 IN 562/25), Schlau Großhandels GmbH Süd-West (case no. 43 IN 573/25), Hammer System Management GmbH (case no. 43 IN 570/25) and Schlau Heimtex Einkaufs GmbH (case no. 43 IN 572/25). The Bielefeld lawyer Prof. Dr Dirk Andres has been appointed as administrator.
