"Drumze. Tibetan Carpets" is the title of an exhibition running from 16 October 2021 to 31 December 2022 at the Carpet Museum in Schloß Voigtsberg in southeastern Germany. 41 carefully chosen rugs from the 15th to the 21th century are on display, starting with old pieces that were part of the everyday lives of Tibetan farmers and herders and ending with the current "fashion"-oriented designer carpets. However, the exhibition's focus is not on the extraordinary, spectacular individual piece, but rather on the typical carpet.
The curators, Thomas Wild and Franz Xaver Erhard, combine their in-depth expertise with the findings of archaeological research, radiocarbon testing, field research and the study of primary sources. Carpet expert Thomas Wild runs Wildcarpets, a gallery for exclusive carpets in Berlin. Tibetologist Franz Xaver Erhard is a researcher of modern Tibetan history and literature at Leipzig University.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue in German and English: Franz Xaver Erhard and Thomas Wild: Drumze. Metamorphoses of the Tibetan Carpet. Potsdam: Edition Tethys, 2021.
