The Austrian Kika/Leiner chain is expected to end the 2020/21 business year in the black (cut-off date: 30 September). This was announced by CEO Reinhold Gütebier in an interview with the newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten. Gütebier, an industry professional, was brought on board in 2018 to restructure the ailing retail chain after René Benzko's Signa Holding took it over from Steinhoff.
According to Gütebier, the online business is growing enormously at Kika/Leiner. "But the proportions are still below average, at Kika/Leiner as well as in the industry in general." In the next few months, however, the five-percent hurdle should be cleared; in the medium term, the company is aiming for eight percent. Gütebier is also very confident when it comes to the Christmas business: "In the next few months, long-haul travelling will be very limited," he says. At the moment, he sees a strong trend towards winter gardens and outdoor furnishings.
